Conservation Efforts

Guatemala is at the forefront to legislate the protection of the Sailfish. As of 1997, the Guatemalan Congress approved the current fishing laws that contemplated the protection of the Sailfish (Istiophorus Platypterus), stating: It strictly prohibits commercial fishing, capture, processing, exporting of the Sailfish, except for sporting practices. Guatemala’s fishing laws are exemplary of a strong national marine conservation ethic and of a country which is the region’s leader in billfish protection.

We, at The Hook, support responsible practices that guarantees long term sustainability for the sport and for the future enjoyment of anglers for many years to come.

We exclusively use circle hooks while billfishing and all billfish are catch and release. Through these efforts, the Guatemalan fishing community is working to ensure that Guatemala will remain a world-class billfishing destination forever.
