Pacific Sailfish

They are common the offshore fishing waters within 20 miles of the Guatemalan shore all year around, although they concentrate most in the months of October through May.

A terrific light tackle opponent, the sailfish is known for its schooling, multiple hook-up tendencies and aerial acrobatics.

The Pacific variety are significantly larger than their Atlantic cousins – with an average fish being in the 80-100lb range – and much larger fish in the 120 lb class common. Read More.


Conservation Efforts

Guatemala is at the forefront to legislate the protection of the sailfish. As of 1997, the Guatemalan Congress approved the current fishing laws that contemplated the protection of the sailfish (Istiophorus Platypterus), stating: It strictly prohibits commercial fishing, capture, processing, exporting of the sailfish, except for sporting practices. Guatemala’s fishing laws are exemplary of a strong national marine conservation ethic and of a country which is the region’s leader in billfish protection. Read More.
